Why Office Cubicles are a Thing of the Past

Increasingly done in most office area design plans is the removal of the cubicles. Cubicles are becoming not so popular anymore, therefore thought out to be a thing of the past in this generation of dynamic corporations.

In order to cut rental cost, businesses are conserving office space. The design in office work area is geared towards utilizing more space by getting rid of office cubicles. The priority now is to accommodate more office furniture. Better ergonomically-designed space-saving furniture are replacing the cubicles.

Before if people were designated in cubicles, thinking this will help them focus more in their work, it was found that this can actually hamper the growth of a professional. It prevents one from interacting and collaborating with office team mates. While cubicles reduce noise and distraction, it has reduced chances of work communications and person-to-person interaction. It is difficult to improve a process if there are no catalysts for improvement.

Here are some of the common disadvantages of using an office cubicle:

1. More difficult supervision of staff
2. Reduced opportunity for communication/collaboration among workers
3. Obstructs natural light from windows
4. less of an ‘open’ space environment
5. Gives less office space for utilization

Today, offices are choosing desks or office tables that can be shared among employees while still giving them space to breath and work freely.

Given the mentioned disadvantages both on business budget, office space utilization, and collaboration among workers, certainly the office cubicle is becoming a thing of the past.
