What to Do with Old Computers-II

As much as buying brand-new office furniture is concerned, one should also be responsible when it comes to disposing them. But whereas office furniture can be easily recycled, reused, or refurbished, office equipment can not. You must be able to know that discarding old electronic equipment such as the computer can do harm to the environment. Hence, you should be careful about what you do with an old computer.

Remember, do not throw away the computer and all its peripherals in the trash. Toxic chemicals have the chance to infiltrate the environment when computers end up in the landfills. Computer includes components like lead, chromium, nickel, and zinc. The computer’s peripherals contain mercury, because relays and switches are made of them. So be extra cautious about what you do with them. After all, it is not just an old office chair that you could easily throw away and not cause such damage to the environment. (But then again, even office chairs get a second chance at serving other users through the process of refurbishing.)

So consider this, if your computer is not yet in its retirement stage, and could still be used, then have someone else use it. Donate it to someone who will reuse it, so that its life can still be enjoyed by those who do not have the luxury to get themselves a unit. Remember, donating computers may be tax-deductible. All it takes is for you to determine what your computer is worth, and get a receipt for your donation. But the important thing is, you are letting someone else use it. So before you decide upon throwing the unit away and harming the environment, or keeping it stored in some area of the house to gather dust; think about what you can do about it first.
