What to Do with Old Computers-I
Cleaning up the office is not just the task of the janitorial people, but for every person in the office as well. Take for instance, the simple task of keeping all the office furniture clean—the office desks are clutter-free, the office chairs in good condition—is sometimes being overlooked by the employee. But this is vital in the harmony of the working environment. Therefore, it must be noted that from the office furniture to the office equipment, everyone in the workplace must know how to manage. Speaking of equipment, does one know what to do with the old computers? For office furniture, it may be simple. Have them replaced or refurbished when they start to look shabby already. But what about the office equipment?
According to a study, only eleven percent of more than 20 million personal computers that became obsolete in the US in the year 1998 were recycled, and 3 percent were reused. What happened to the rest? They were thrown away in landfills, or just stuck in the storage areas of the house. But did you know that you can prolong the inevitable retirement of your computer? Just follow these steps carefully, and enjoy a longer computer life.
-Plug your equipment into a surge protector to avoid potentially damaging electricity surges.
-Clean your computer thoroughly at least once a year—inside and out. Built-up dust and grime can compromise your computer’s performance. You’ll need computer cleaning products such as a can of compressed air to blow the dust away.
-Buy high-quality peripherals that will last. For example, the Pennsylvania DEP suggests buying a high-quality monitor, which should last for at least six to seven years. When it comes time to upgrade your PC, the monitor can be used with a new computer.
After enjoying the computer’s mortality, it will not be correct to store the computer units somewhere in the house. The key here is to recycle, or reuse. Donate it even, to those who will find use for the material of the computer. Do not just dump it somewhere because a computer’s complex structure can cause harm to the environment.
