My Day Office for the Home-based Workers-II
My Day Office, a newly conceived business which caters to the people who do not need, or cannot afford yet a long office lease. This store will be like the “community” where these home-based workers are bound to spend their working days with the perks of enjoying real office furnitures and real workspaces as compared to, their dining room-turned-office.
With Shauna Brennan’s brilliant idea comes the solution for these people. The decision of where to work and how to set up a small office, is a familiar struggle among Seattle-area startups, said Michael Franz, a business adviser with the Washington Small Business Development Center, which is run by Washington State University.
Traffic congestion, combined with high housing prices close to the city’s core, have forced many small businesses out to the suburbs or into homes, said Franz in an interview. He has advised 2,000 small businesses in 10 years.
“In the past, offices were viewed as a place to hire employees and keep them,” Franz said. “But many employees today don’t want to come in, especially not if they can get the job done closer to home. Offices are changing—slowly—to the mobile model.”
True to what Franz said, the younger generation of business owners who are more comfortable with mobile working, text messaging and using cell phones, are shunning the traditional office. Brokerage firm CB Richard Ellis reports that office space in downtown Seattle remains tight—and is expected to tighten over the next year. High-end space rents for $40 per square foot—which translates to about $20,000 per year for a three-person office are much of a burden to bear.
While these workers would rather stay at home, it is still difficult to “the get the job done” when not all office equipment are present. With the establishment of My Day Office, people will be able to enjoy the complete perks of working in a real office—but it applies as a form of membership. Brennan will require her clients to pay the membership fees and dues—which were promised to be a lot cheaper.
