Light It Up – Part 1

Working all day, whether its at home or at your office, tends to stress you out. We often complain about having back pains or muscle strain. One of the most common complaints would be the eye strain. After spending a considerable amount of time in front of the computer, our eyes feel tired and sometimes we even get headaches due to that. This can be prevented with proper lighting. Lights contribute to an office just as much as the office furniture does for it affects the way the employees would work. It is important to work in a well illuminated office for it brings us comfort and ease. If an office employee does not feel comfortable with the work place this will result to less productivity, so it is important to invest in office furniture, particularly the lights.

However, a well lit office does not necessarily mean bright lights or the same type of lights. Most offices have lights that are uniform, since our eyes tend to get attracted to the brightest part of the room, this causes distraction. If there is not one area that is brighter than the others our eyes would constantly look for the brightest area therefore would be restless and would cause fatigue.

This can be remedied by creating angles of light. We can make use of indirect lighting sources to avoid uniform levels of lighting. One form of illumination that is most comforting to the eye is a fixture that reflects off of the ceiling and into the space since this is the least glaring. Another idea is to have adjustable sources of light depending on the writing and reading tasks or needs. It is advisable to place an adjustable desk lamp near the work area and ensure that the light’s intensity and angle can be adjusted according to the task at hand. Lighting has to be in layers and different intensities at different angles.

In the very high technology world that we are in, offices are more adept at using computers. Most work actually require an office employee to spend the whole day just sitting on the office chair and in front of a computer, especially those who are working from home.
