Funds Pay for City Rep’s New Office Furnitures

In El Paso Texas, city Representatives Rachel Quintana and Eddie Holguin has allegedly been spending the taxpayers’ funds on new office furnitures, to upgrade their respective offices. The Director of the city’s Office Management and Budget, David Almonte, has said that the money which Quintana used for purchasing the furniture came from a capital acquisition fund, and that whatever items where bought with this money will automatically become a city property.

“We usually allow the Representatives to make some sort of adjustment, although minor, on their new furniture purchases when first elected to office,” Almonte explained in an interview.

Quintana has reportedly spent about $3,800 on new office furnitures, while Holguin’s purchases came were made transparent in his annual allotment of $10,000 in discretionary funds. He has spent around $2,500 with the new office furnitures.

Representative Beto O’Rourke was quick to state where most of their discretionary funds should go—to the constituents.

“We try to use as much of our discretionary funds budget to spend on constituent issues like street lights and other neighborhood improvements,” he said in an interview. “Since we got into office in 2005, we haven’t spent a dollar on office furniture.”

In defense, Quintana and Holguin were quick to explain to the media.

“Being that the furniture is as old as I am, I figured it would be nice to have something to last me at least through the time I was here,” Quintana said in an interview.

Holguin’s explanation was that he bought the office desks primarily for his secretaries.

“Their furniture is very old,” he said in an interview. “It is falling apart.”

Holguin has not bought any office furnitures for his own office despite the fact that most of the items were already 15 years old. He further stated that he used leftover money from the office renovation of City Manager Joyce Wilson for a paint job for his own office.
