Environmentalist Fight Global Warming with Furniture
Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation. Today more than ever, its impending calamities are well documented and that if not acted upon immediately, its may result in catastrophic proportions.
Many environmental organizations have rapidly surfaced to promote awareness. The Community Furniture Project is a prime example. This innovative charity that reuses furniture and household goods has celebrated the third anniversary of its launch.
Since 2004, the charity has collected donated furniture, household goods and electrical appliances that could otherwise end up in landfill. With offices in Basingstoke and Newbury, the organization sells the accumulated furniture with very very low prices and help fund its cost. They help the needy by offering huge discounts to people on low incomes, benefits or pensions.
Today, the Community Furniture Project still continues their advocacy and actually expanded. They now handle nearly up to 200 tonnes of everything from office chairs, office desks, sofas, tables and cabinets.
“We have been operating here since 2004, encouraging furniture and appliance reuse, minimising waste and helping people improve their quality of life. We have had tremendous support from the people of Basingstoke and the surrounding area.” said Phelim O’Hagan, manager of the Basingstoke Community Furniture Project.
It was recorded last year that more than 9,600 customer visits came through the organization’s door with about 1,705 collections. More importantly, they diverted more than 183 tonnes of material from landfill. These highly decreases the global warming preventing the items from being burned or simply just being waste.
The project’s endeavor has been recognized by the local government. Councilor Elaine Still, who serves as the borough council’s environment chief, said that Community Furniture’s initiative has been a success.
“By supporting the reuse of furniture and household goods we have been able to help local people to have a higher quality of life through having access to more furniture and household goods at realistic prices.”
