DVT: A Health Threat for the Diligent Worker
Deep Vain Thrombosis, also known as DVT, is a deadly disorder that can be acquired in the office. Workers sitting at prolonged periods of time, usually behind their office computer, can develop a blood clot that is found to be fatal.
DVT, dubbed as e-thrombosis, was observed in man who worked eight hours sitting at his desk. By the time he was done working, the doctors found a blood clot that reached up to his lungs. The disorder could be fatal if the man took more time sitting in the office for it could have reached his brain. At than condition, he could have died.
DVT is due to blood circulation problems. Because of poor blood circulation, a person can develop blood clots in the body. This is normally acquired by people who spend many hours being confined in a small space, like long-haul flights.
Medical Research Institute in New Zealand found out that this too can happen for people who spend hours and hours just being seated in the office.
Medical director for thrombosis charity Lifeblood, Dr Beverley Hunt, stated that, “Sitting for very long periods in an office has never been considered a risk before, but immobility is a key factor in causing thrombosis.”
And workers spending great hours sat behind their desk are at a much greater risk in developing DVT. This has posed a health risk among UK workers. With an increasing trend in sedentary lifestyle, where office workers are more confined in their working areas sitting in front of a computer, DVT is truly a major threat.
A consultant vascular surgeon at London’s Lister Hospital, Dr John Scurr, said that, “Potentially this is a big problem with millions at risk because the trend is for a sedentary lifestyle, particularly at work, where long hours sitting in front of a screen are the norm.”
Given this threat on employee health, there is a greater demand or need for more ergonomically-designed chairs and other office furniture. Seating devices must be able to provide normal or even improved blood circulation for the diligent worker.
