DA’s New Office Furniture Raises Eyebrows in Dallas

The new office of District Attorney John Roach has been filled with buzz and intrigue as it has reportedly been filled with ostentatious office furniture. Judges in particular were said to have reacted with this, as the new $54 million Collin County Courthouse has only been open for two weeks. Some county commissioners decided to check what the commotion was all about.

“It’s very nice furniture—I’ll leave it at that,” said County Judge Keith Self in an interview, leader of the Commissioners Court. Commissioner Joe Jaynes agreed, saying “It’s nicer than what you’re going to see in our offices. There’s been a little eyebrow-lifting.”

Hence, an interview by the Dallas news was conducted to probe the main man of the issue himself, Attorney Roach. When he was immediately asked about whether he got the office furniture from the taxpayer’s money, he replied no. He has spent a total of $25, 183 on office desks, office chairs, some filing cabinets for himself, and for his top five aides as well. He selected an executive-style, leather-topped office desk and two high-back office chairs for guests. These soft, caramel-colored leather seats immediately caught the taste of the DA and decided to put it in his office.

He explained that the money he spent on the office furniture was acquired by the hot check fees that the DA keeps a fraction of; this means money collected and seized assets by criminals. It has been legally noted that this money may be spent according to the DA’s wishes.

“Criminals bought the furniture, not taxpayers,” Mr. Roach maintains.

Commissioners, who control the DA’s budget, acknowledge that Attorney Roach has indeed done nothing wrong. However, there have been talks about how unfair it was that the DA has a special fund compared to the rest of them. Nevertheless, the new Collin County Courthouse is free of any taxpayer’s money that is used the wrong way.
