Buying Guide for File Cabinets in the Office – Part 1

In every office, whether at home or not, filing cabinets are a must have. Not only are they a system of storage but most importantly they organize all your files and keep them protected. Just like buying office furniture like office desks and office chairs, there are a few things to consider when it comes to choosing and purchasing filing cabinets. You need to determine which one best suits your needs and in order to do so, it is imperative to know how much space do you have and they type of files you will be storing.

There are two types of filing cabinets, the vertical and the lateral. The vertical filing cabinet is the one most commonly seen in many offices. It has the traditional style of a cabinet, tall and narrow. It can house around two to five drawers that can hold papers and documents like letters and file folders which are placed in the vertical cabinet drawer from front to back, the files are usually arranged in a certain manner and it faces the user of course for better organization. And since it is tall and narrow, it does not take up a lot of space in the work area. Since vertical cabinets only use up minimal wall space, it takes up a lot of walking space so you need to have enough room in your work place and other office furniture.

But just the same, vertical cabinets are good for long term storage since it is compact specially when the drawers are closed. A vertical file cabinet should be in an area that is equal to the depth of the file cabinet which is around 29 inches, include as well the length of the drawer when open which is another 29 inches or so, for a total of approximately 58 inches.
