Swag-leg furniture relaunched
Herman Miller again presented the swag-leg furniture with hopes that it will be reintrodued. It was noted that the swag-leg was launched nearly a half century ago but was not able to click at that time.
George Nelson designed desk and chairs with swag-legs and these lineups were lauched in 1958. Swagging is a process that uses pressure to taper and curve a metal tube.
Gregg VanderKooi, product manager of Herman Miller’s classic lines, described the furniture as “ahead of their time.”
“There is a lot more appreciation for the classic products now,” he told The Grand Rapids Press for a story published Friday. “Sales of reintroduced furniture is huge compared to what they originally were.”
“By keeping things fresh and constantly coming out with reintroduced classics, it keeps Herman Miller out there and visible,” he said.
There’s a lot of interest in mid-century modern furniture, said Thor Sorenson, manager of Design Quest, a Grand Rapids furniture store that carries Herman Miller for the Home products.
“So much of the furniture being built today, you just don’t know what it is made of, there’s so much finish,” he said. “The great thing with mid-century modern furniture is that it was a real honest product. It shows you what it really is.”
Chairs, tables and a small desk that accommodates laptop computers will be the furnitures that The Herman Miller swag-leg collection. The chair shells are made in Taiwan, the chairs and desks are assembled in Holland, Mich., and the wood components are produced in nearby Zeeland.
