Qualities of an Ergonomic Chair – Part 1

Being sedentary workers, most individuals know the many ailments one could get from sitting in office chairs for long hours of work. Eventually, backaches and fatigue are incurred over time which could seriously affect ones productivity. Worse, an employee might even derive a long term ailment that could totally prevent him from working the same job.



Perhaps the only solution to this, getting your staff ergonomic office chairs will reduce the risks of work related injuries. The design of these chairs greatly improve posture and equips its occupants with customizable features. An individual can adjust height and stability according to one’s preference. Over long periods of time, back and neck strain can be avoided thus making sitting more comfortable and relaxed.

Although it would seem quite an easy task, buying ergonomic office furniture would somehow prove itself to be difficult. Prices vary greatly: predictably, superior materials and construction carry a bigger price tag. Stores only carry generic models and doesn’t include different collections. Lastly, not all that are displayed include ergonomic features that suit your preference.

FEATURE: Back Support

WHAT IT DOES: Height adjustment. Supports the lumbar area (lower back). Look for chairs that provide mid-back and upper-back support as well. Tilt mechanism: Maintains support as you move and recline. It’s best to have your back slightly reclined while seated at your desk.

FEATURE: Seat Pan

WHAT IT DOES: Your weight should be distributed evenly on the seat. Look for a rounded or waterfall edge at the front of the seat, which prevents the seat from catching behind the knees and cutting off circulation. Three to four fingers should fit between the seat pan’s front edge and the back of the knees. Seat should extend at east one inch from either side of the hips for optimum comfort.
