(Office Chairs Sitting Atop China-I) Kuoching Office Furniture’s Rise in the Chinese Industry

The Chinese Industry has been constantly evolving in the industries that it fosters. An interesting addition to this growth would be the office furniture industry. It has significantly pivoted with its export value reaching $899 million USD in 2005, which became 6.5% of the nation’s total furniture export. The well-accredited Chinese-made office chairs were considered accountable for this boom.

It has not always been easy for office furniture makers in the Chinese market. But among the pillars of this rise, the Kuoching Office Furniture was paid due respect for the success that it was able to give.

The Kuoching Office Furniture was founded in Taiwan in 1979, specializing in the production, design, and sale of office chairs. The company started to export in 1993 and stepped into the Chinese market 10 years ago, setting up its first Chinese factory in Fanyu district of Guangzhou that shipped its entire output overseas. It subsequently established factories in Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu to tap the domestic market.

“Following years of steady growth, Kuoching has entered the third-stage or take-off stage in its development. We plan to set up 10 factories in Heshan of Guangdong Province and the first-phase engineering work for the first two has been completed, and will go online by the end of May,” H.T. Fang, vice president of Kuoching’s global sales division said in an interview.

According to him, over 10 years ago, the company had struggled with high production costs in Taiwan which turned export development into a steep uphill battle. The company then decided to establish Chinese factories after over two years of careful evaluation regarding the value, timing, location, and scale of operations, in order to facilitate further development of the company by capitalizing on the advantages of China.

Today, Kuoching has become a reputable maker of specialized office chairs in both domestic and international markets, partly through working closely with internationally renowned firms such as Hon, LazyBoy, and Trend Way, as well as Japan’s Okamura and Itoki.

“Following years of steady growth, Kuoching has entered the third-stage or take-off stage in its development. We plan to set up 10 factories in Heshan of Guangdong Province and the first-phase engineering work for the first two has been completed, and will go online by the end of May,” Fang concluded.
