Michalsens Office Furniture to Open at Machesney

Michalsens Office Furniture bought the aboned building from Northwest Bank of Rockford for a million dollars, while its building in Loves Park was sold to the bank for $400,000 which also happens to be the selling price.

The owner of the famous office furniture store, Jim Michalsen, said his growing business needs the additional space of the 68,000-square-foot Rev’d Up building that it purchased. In the next 60 days, Michalsen said he hopes to have the move to Machesney Park complete. Records show the sale closed June 28.

“We moved here (in Loves Park) six years ago, but we outgrew this in almost three years… mainly because of Internet sales,” Michalsen said in an interview.

Though the building at 8010 N. Second St. has been vacant since 2003, when Rev’d Up closed, Michalsen said very little cleanup was required. “Most of it is like weeds and cleaning up some of the building and minor stuff,” he said.

“We are trying to set up a meeting with him to see what he plans to do with (the building),” said Bob Mullins, the administrative and finance director for Machesney Park in an interview.

According to Michalsen’s plans, he will divide the building into six to eight additional stores and rent the space. He also shared that he has received interest from potential stores and that some deals are in the works.

The Rev’d Up building exists in a tax increment financing district the village plans to implement later this year. The district is designed to rejuvenate the North Second Street corridor. Machesney Park would provide Michalsen tax dollars to renovate the building and has previously asked the new owners to repaint the building and improve its bleak landscaping.

Michalsen’s move was probably prompted by a recent study which says that moving to Machesney Park will prove fruitful for the business, reporting that residents there want a furniture store. Machesney Park leaders have tried for years to recruit a furniture retailer. Mullins only had this to say, “any infrastructural improvements they make would be eligible.”
