KWL Company to Bring Office Sustainability-II

Jean Broda, Kerr Wood Leidal Associates Ltd. (KWL)’s communications manager says that the Still Creek Industrial Park of Burnaby was chosen as the ideal location for their office relocation as it offered not only the expanded space needed but also many of the commuter considerations. These include the new Gilmore SkyTrain station.

For Broda, she no longer treks bridges moving from Vancouver to the North Shore and dreading a bridge tie-up. Her commute time is reduced from 30-40 minutes to 17 minutes in the early morning when traffic is minimal.

Apparently, most employees have found it easier to get to work. Several employees cycle to work on a regular basis. Due to this, KWL adjusted its office furniture and has provided bike storage area and shower facilities to make a feasible transportation alternative.

However, the benefits are not only to giving employees an improved working environment but showing the employees how a new concept can become a part of their work. For example, the office dishwasher, dual-flush toilet and waterless urinals all conserve water.

KWL also installed a number of different product brands in the washrooms so employees could test their features. Other office furnitures have been specified as well to attain its ergonomic functions for the employees. Motion sensors were even installed in many areas to turn off lights when employees leave the room.

The building’s 18,000 square feet on one floor plus another 5,000 square feet added recently made the office area “gutted” to make way for KWL’s concept of new sustainable design. Old materials were re-used where possible, such as a large lobby plate glass window etched with a mountain scene and the firm’s logo.

Other office furnitures were re-used with some new pieces added. When items such as carpeting were chosen, they were of recycled materials, which in turn, could be recycled again when worn out.
