Keeping it Green: Herman Miller Inc.
Herman Miller Inc. has been consistently recognized by Fortune Magazine as one of the “Most Admired Companies” on the vast list of office furniture companies.
The main reason for this is because Herman Miller’s products are known worldwide as one of the best line of corporate furniture that incorporates the latest innovations. Also, the company’s products are engineered to be ecologically sound, meaning they contribute well to environmental endeavors. Many of the furniture released out in the market are admirable in manufacture. Office desks, chairs, cabinets and many other items are produced with the most luxurious of designs and the most efficient of functionality.
Their design process also utilizes the Ecodesign, an approach to design of a product with special consideration for the environmental impacts of the product during its whole lifecycle. Particularly, this designing technique provide sustainability by saving materials, energy efficient manufacturing, recycled content, and recyclable content, including design for disassembly.
Life cycle assessment is another great method used by Herman Miller in their production. The goal of LCA is to compare the environmental performance of products and services, to be able to choose the least burdensome one. The term ‘life cycle’ refers to the notion that a fair, holistic assessment requires the assessment of raw material production, manufacture, distribution, use and disposal including all intervening transportation steps. This is the life cycle of the product. The concept also can be used to optimize the environmental performance of a single product or to optimize the environmental performance of a company. The term “emergy” is often used as an analysis tool to determine embodied energy.
Perhaps the best facet of Herman Miller Inc. is their unwaivering devotion to the environmental causes. They helped fund the start of the United States Green Building Council, and hired architect William McDonough to design them a factory incorporating green design principles. The building is known as the Greenhouse and is an example of green building.
It goes without saying that Herman Miller is a fine example of how should other companies be. Caring for the planet while caring for the consumer, Herman Miller is sure to stay on top of the Fortune Magazine list for years to come.
