Women’s Desks are Dirtier in the Office

Who says that women are the tidier specie?

Research showed that men had cleaner office desks than women. This is according to Professor Charles Gerba from the University of Arizona. Men have three to four times cleaner desks than women do.

This may due to the fact women keep food in their desk drawers. Findings also show that women’s cosmetics and skincare products invite bacteria to travel around, thus, resulting to a more bacteria or dirt-infested office desk. It was also confirmed that women are more likely to be interacting with kids. And we all know how kids can be messy at times.

Apart from the expected chaos that a person can experience due to a messy office desk, the research study also has an implication to the state of health of the women workers. Since more than half of an employee’s day is spent working on his desk, an untidy desk can pose health problems. So for all you ladies out there, it’s time to keep your office desk tidy. Here are some tips:

1. Create a weekly appointment of dusting, polishing, and even cleaning using alcohol or liquid cleaner for your desk.
2. Wipe your keyboard, and computer monitor with a tissue. You may use a little soap and water or liquid cleaner too.
3. Don’t eat at your desk, but if you can’t help it at least move away from your keyboard to prevent crumbs to get into it. If your crumbs fall on the floor, sweep it.
4. Organize your files and folders. Keep your most important (urgent) files in the area where you can reach them most easily.
5. Keep nothing on your desk unless you absolutely need them. If you aren’t joining sheets of paper with tape, move the dispenser off the desk. If you want personal photos in the office, have only one on the desk or better yet, hang them on the wall.

A clean office desk will not only improve how efficient and productive you work. It can also keep your health in good condition, away from dust, dirt, and bacteria.
