Tips in setting up your work station and your computer on your office desk
Working a nine-to-five job would mean being surrounded by papers, numbers and, you guessed it, office furniture. And the most common office equipment that an office employee uses to do his or her work is the computer. Here are some great tips on how to set this piece of equipment up on your work desk to utilise and maximize space and help you achieve a comfortable work station.
Determine the size of your office desk. Does it look cramped? This can tell you if you need to let the company know if you need to upgrade your office desk or work on getting a separate computer table.
The desk and chair are two of the important office furniture that you have to plan for. These two will be part and parcel of your home away from home. You will be spending a lot of time in this area, using this office furniture. See if the office chair fits underneath your desk. Make sure they fit comfortably together since we’re talking about another space hugger — the computer. The set up of your work area should not be awkward or a hassle to ensure maximum productivity.
We now move on to the computer. A computer normally resides on top of the office desk. It’s quite a given that you will have one on your desk. The desk should be deep enough to hold the monitor, keyboard and have the room for your arms to rest as you type. There should also be room for you to work on documents.
Some tips in setting up your computer on your office desk:
Bear in mind as you put the computer on your desk, the monitor should be directly in your line of sight. One way to determine if you positioned it correctly is that the top edge of the monitor is situated at eye level. This is to prevent you from getting neck strain, which you will definitely get if the monitor is located elsewhere, since you’ll be constantly moving your head up or down as you do your work.
When it’s time to settle on the keyboard’s position on your desk, you need to sit down behind your desk and try out the position. The ideal position for the keyboard is when you set it at the same height as your elbow as you sit in your office chair.
In case you have a keyboard shelf built into the office desk, it’s good to know that it should be large enough to accommodate your computer mouse. If it can’t, it can contribute to neck and shoulder pain since it will cause you to regularly move your hand from one level to another to use the keyboard and then the mouse. Keeping this reason in mind, try to place your mouse or trackball as close to the keyboard as possible to prevent any body stress of muscle strain.
