The Dread of Office Desks

Here is an interesting fact. Scientific studies show that the average toilet seat has been found to have about 49 germs per square inch. While this information is quite not that surprising, there is something more we must know, especially to those who works tireless hours at their office desks. A recent study conducted by an authoritative group of researchers concluded that the average office desk harbors about 20,961 germs per square inch, which is 400 times more bacteria than the average toilet seat. It is indeed very, very surprising.

The crux of the problem isn’t working at one’s desk alone. Desks were just plain desks when workers had time to live the rest of their lives elsewhere. Now more than ever, office desks have become cafeteria trays, footrests, manicure stations and coffee bars. Employees eat off them, sleep on them and in several instances, flossed teeth at them. Utterly gross but admittedly true.

Additional to the catastrophic bacteria brought by these desks, there are still plenty of areas where microorganisms are bred. Keyboards are also breeding ground for germs being fallen crumbs serving as their food. Grabbing the workstation phone alone gives one a significant dosage enough to strike an epidemic in the office. It may sound very disgusting but the truth needs to be told. Germs and bacteria found in office furniture does send high numbers of workers to the clinic and straight to their beds with a box of tissue and hot soup on the table.

The only way to stop the spread of virus is by being very meticulous in terms of cleanliness. Disinfect your station with highly recommended products. Remember, water is not much of a disinfectant so wiping the desk with damp won’t do much. However, frequent hand washing does reduce the risk of acquiring preying bacteria.

Office furniture may be all we need for a productive environment. Keeping them clean, not only prolongs their capability but also ensures a healthier working condition.
